Probably you might be reading this article on your mobile phone or laptop or desktop or may be in any device that technology today has created. I mean you are definitely not reading it’s printed version. Whatever device you might be using, have you ever wondered how the internet was developed and came into existence making you able to connect with the millions of other computers and provide you the opportunity to see and experience the things that you would have never imagined otherwise. Yes, many people do wonder and also feel astonished seeing the power of internet. Today I am going to explain how this awesome technology called Internet was developed and how it grew into a huge inter connected network of computers and made our life easier.

Internet is a product of the competition. Yes that’s right, In 1957 the soviet Union launched the first satellite called Sputnik I. It made USA inferior in technology than Soviet Union. For the technological superiority US president Dwight Eisenhower created DARPA (Defense/Advanced Research Project Agency). It is the innovative research and development organization that funded the development of the ARPANET. The ARPANET project was directed by Robert Taylor and managed by Lawrence Roberts. With the meticulous endeavour and continuous persistent ARPANET was born on August 30, 1969. The first message was sent over the ARPANET  from computer science Professor Leonard Kleinrock’s laboratory at University of California, Los Angeles to the second network node at Stanford Research Institute. ARPANET was the first Internet which used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network.

In 1970s scientist Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf developed communication model known as Transmission Control Protocol(TCP) and Internet Protocol(IP) which set standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks. ARPANET adopted the TCP/IP on January 1st of 1983. Then after the researchers started to assemble the Networks of Networks which eventually became the Modern Internet.

In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web and then online world took a more recognizable form. WWW helped linking hypertext documents into an information system, accessible from any node on the network. The internet took its more advanced form throughout the 90’s with the rise of E-mail (Electronic Mail), Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), E-commerce, Social Networking Sites, Blogs, Online Newspapers and many more.

There was dot com bubble in late 1990’s which gave birth to many Internet companies and uplifted the internet to the next level. Now the internet is the home of millions of web pages connected to each other. There are like millions of blogs, websites which you can access easily sitting in your room. Today Tech giants like Amazon, Google, Facebook, YouTube, Microsoft rule the internet with many products. Everyday internet is growing by its size and becoming even more bigger. So, this is how internet was developed into its current state. Now, it is the source of immense amount of information and knowledge and also a source of distraction, you can shape your future with its correct use.
