Industrial Engineering: An Introduction

Industrial Engineering: An Introduction

March 16, 2018

Industrial engineering (IE) is the branch of engineering that uses mathematics and natural science to develop a way to utilize material, man, money and machine economically for optimization of process. IE is looking of statistical data and coming up with solutions through planning and testing. IE is study of principles of engineering analysis and processes. It is bridge between management and operation

IE is diverse disciple for innovation in management and technology dealing with development and designing of system. It helps understanding process/operation of organization so that improvement can be made for gaining optimization in profit and reduces investment. It covers area like operation research, system engineering, ergonomics and work study, manufacturing, maintenance, production, quality, safety, supply chain management, logistics, data analysis, etc. IE gives idea about designing and planning of product and manufacturing process. IE encourages coming with solutions at different angles for a process to be carried so, best alternative could be chosen depending on situation to get what is needed.IE is challenging, rewarding and full of opportunities.

IE provides wide range of opportunities in terms of employment due to its flexibility in both management and technical part. IE is more than manufacturing as it provides education in both engineering and business. IE is just concerned with making the process or do things in a better way by increasing ability to do more with less available and making work safer and faster. IE is concerned with reducing production cost, increasing efficiency, improving quality with ensuring worker health and safety.

IE is concerned with development of layout, costing, quality specification and performance standards. The idea of IE is used in service industries, shipping and logistics, entertainment industries, financial management, etc. IE combine engineering with management for best use of facilities and equipment. . IE give importance to mathematical tools and utilization of quantitative techniques.

IE deals with the optimization of the complex processes by eliminating waste of time, money, manpower, machine and material. IE helps doing analysis and selection of plans, process, production schedule inventories and assembling methods along with design and selection of tool, equipment and accessories for both raw and finished goods. During the optimization process there is need of identification of cause of failure which can be done through both engineering and management processes. Providing proper working condition, different types of training, incentives, compensation, etc. helps in better performance of employee which is taught in IE. Hence IE can termed as subject that always seeks for better way of doing so that optimization is achieved.

The main scope of  IE is in the fields of medium and large scale manufacturing industries like cement, beverages, breweries, metal manufacture, and service sectors like hospitals, hotels, airlines services etc. In the government sector industrial engineering is treated as equivalent to mechanical engineering and they can fight in Public Service Commission, Government authorities like Nepal Electricity Authority, Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Nepal Oil Corporation etc.
