Civil engineering also  called as Infrastructural Engineering, is one of the oldest principles of engineering after military engineering. Civil engineering is a professional engineering that deals with design, construction and maintenance of various wide range of structures like roads, bridges, canals, pipe lines, railways etc.  Its application is mainly for solving the problems of society.

The concept of civil engineering accounts back to thousands of years ago. As a profession it has become an aspect of life since the very beginning of human existence say about 4000 BC ago in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Egyptian pyramid, Quant water Management, Great Wall of China and many others are ancient proofs of civil engineering. However, Civil Engineering as a means of learning   started from the 18th century only.

The scope of civil engineering is very wide. There are many principles of civil engineering such as structural, environmental, transportation, construction, geotechnical, environmental, earthquake, forensic, water resources and many others. Civil engineering is the foundation for all other engineering as well.

The different areas where Civil engineer finds their career can be listed as:

  1. Government services like Road, Irrigation, Re-construction, Electricity, Water supply departments, Municipality, District Technical Officer
  2. In Private sectors like Hydropower, Industries, Construction and Consultant Companies
  3. Different NGO/INGOs
  4. Startup own Construction and Consultant Company
  5. Lecturer Engineering College.

There are lots of great achievements of civil engineering that are withstanding today some  of them are as follows:

  • The palms island is the largest artificial island of world and Burzkhalifa is the tallest(2717ft)in UAE.
  • Three Gorges Dam of China is the worlds largest concrete structure and hydroelectric power station(22,500MW).
  • The channel tunnel of Europe 22 mile long is an underwater tunnel.
  • The Bailong elevator of china is the highest(1070 feet) and heaviest outdoor elevator .
  • Milaau viaduct is the tallest stayed road bridge (1,125 ft above base structure).
  • National stadium in Biejing is the worlds largest steel structure(80,000 people capacity).
  • The international space station is only a permanent structure assembled in the space .
  • Lake Mead istheworlds largest artificial lake.
